Development Education
ACTIONAID Education offers a wide range of services, including education packs for primary and secondary schools, school visits and teacher training. Most materials are low-cost and easy to use, and include activity booklets, photographs, maps and stories about real people.
These materials help people:
1. Learn about individual countries
2. Appreciate the links between their own lives and the lives of people living in other countries
3. Look at reasons why poor people have so few choices
4. Find out about ACTIONAID's long-term development projects
About ACTIONAID
Founded in 1972, ACTIONAID is one of the UK's leading development charities, working in 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Through long-term development projects, ACTIONAID is creating real and lasting change for some of the world's poorest children, families and communities.
Working together
Projects are tailored to the needs of vulnerable people, whether they are families made homeless by war in Mozambique, poor city children in Kenya, or landless families in Bangladesh.
All ACTIONAID programmes are designed and set up in close consultation with local people. This partnership helps poor people gain greater control over their futures. ACTIONAID programmes include:
1. Education for children and adults
2. Health care
3. Sinking of new wells to provide safe water
4. Providing sanitation
5. Training in agricultural techniques
6. Credit and savings schemes which generate income
7. Helping people with disabilities or HIV/AIDS
ACTIONAID is secular and non-political. It works to help the poorest people regardless of religion, race or political persuasion.
Help in emergencies
ACTIONAID's Emergencies Unit is always ready to help communities respond to crises such as famine or conflict. The aim of all emergency work is to help find longer-term solutions to prevent further disasters.
Towards change
ACTIONAID aims for wider change through lobbying governments in the UK and worldwide. Through such advocacy work, ACTIONAID is increasing understanding of the causes of poverty.
ACTIONAID supporters
More than 150 000 people support ACTIONAID's work and there are 200 local groups working to raise funds and promote ACTIONAID. Many supporters help children and communities through sponsorship schemes.
Comments from the communities
'In the past we (the women) would spend over eight hours collecting water and even then we didn't have enough for our needs as the well used to dry up after a few hours pumping. Now the ACTIONAID well takes less time, the water is clean and everyone has enough to carry home.'
Awa Sosseh Mbaye, The Gambia
'We inform ACTIONAID about our problems. We feel happy because they listen to us carefully and talk to us in a good manner.'
Noor Nishan, Kalinger, Pakistan
'With the drought we may not complete this project (to extend the school) alone but what we decided was that we could make bricks - 100 of them each - and approach ACTIONAID to give us the cement.'
